A floating licence permits the software to be installed on an unlimited number of machines or on a server, but requires an internet connection, and the number of simultaneous end-users is limited by the number of seats. (People’s machines effectively ‘check-out’ the software, much like they would ‘check out’ a library book – i.e., just when they want to use it). Non-floating licences can be used offline and are limited by the total number of activations. People have the software installed on their individual machines and can use the software anytime and anywhere. Floating licences are great for large labs/teaching facilities where PRIMER software can reside on a server and be administered to a large number of machines. If you are interested in purchasing a floating licence please fill in this form to let us know your requirements.

Please see the specific section entitled ‘Floating licence configuration guide‘ in our Learning Hub resource ‘Managing your PRIMER 8 Installation’.

No, PRIMER 8 can not be installed natively on a Mac computer. However, using PRIMER on a Mac is still possible through dual-booting or by running PRIMER within Windows virtualization software written for a Mac.

Yes. PRIMER 8 can load PRIMER 7 workspace files. When working in PRIMER 8, you can also save your files in a PRIMER 7 workspace format. However, if you used any of the new features in PRIMER 8 that are not available in PRIMER 7, then you will not have full access to those particular results if you save the file in a PRIMER 7 workspace format and load it into PRIMER 7.

No. You can install PRIMER 8 without having to uninstall PRIMER 7.

Yes, you can save a PRIMER workspace file (*.pwk) from PRIMER 8 into PRIMER 7 or even PRIMER 6 format.  Note that some new graphical elements available in PRIMER 8 are not available in earlier versions of PRIMER (e.g., Violin Plots), so these may not be viewable in PRIMER 6 or PRIMER 7, but most items in the workspace (results files, graphics, etc.) will transfer to PRIMER 7 format perfectly well.
